How overload damages an engine

How overload damages an engine

Overload is one of the main reasons for engine failure. Let's look athow overload damages the motorand how to protect yourself.

Damage mechanism

When overloaded, the motor consumes a current higher than the rated one. More current means more heating of the winding. The insulation begins to work at temperatures above the permissible temperature, and exceeding it by just 8–10 °C reduces its service life by half. As a result:

  1. The winding overheats.
  2. The insulation ages quickly.
  3. An interturn short circuit occurs.
  4. The motor burns out.

Types overload

TypeExample
MechanicalStuck, increased load
ElectricalPhase loss, low voltage
ThermalPoor cooling, frequent starts

How to protect yourself

  • Thermal relay - correctly configured according to the rated current.
  • Phase control relay - against phase loss.
  • Correct selection of engine power.
  • Control of coolingand load.

Almost overload always preventable with the right protection. If the motor has already been damaged, rewind will be required to eliminate the cause of the overload. Diagnosis of the cause is carried out during inspection.
