The engine does not gain momentum: reasons

The engine does not gain momentum: reasons

When the engine does not pick up speed - it starts, but rotates slower than normal or takes a long time to accelerate - this is a sign of lack of torque. The reason may be in the power supply, the load or the machine itself.

Main reasons

  1. Overload. The load torque is too high for the motor, the speed “sags”.
  2. Phase loss.In two phases the motor accelerates weakly and hums.
  3. Low voltage of the network. The torque drops, acceleration is delayed.
  4. Breakage of the rotor rods. The asynchronous motor loses torque, operates with large slip.
  5. Incorrect connection - for example, “star” instead of “delta”.

Checklist

What checkNormal
Voltage at the terminalsComplies with the passport
Presence of all phasesThree equal phases
Connection diagramStar/delta according to the passport
Current by phaseUniform, not higher than nominal

Where to start

First exclude external causes - voltage, connection diagram and load. If the network and connection are normal, but the engine is still weak, the problem is internal: a break in the rotor rods or an interturn short circuit. This reveals diagnosis, and eliminates repair of an asynchronous motor.
