A broken winding is one of the reasons why the engine does not work or hums. Unlike an interturn short circuit, a break is easier to identify. Let's look at how to determine a winding break.
Signs of a break
- The engine does not start or only hums.
- For a three-phase one, it works as if a phase was broken (overheating, weak traction).
- Lack of current in one of the phases.
How to check with a multimeter
- De-energize the motor and disconnect the leads.
- Switch the multimeter to resistance measurement mode (continuity).
- Measure the resistance of each winding (phase).
- Compare the results.
| Result | Conclusion |
|---|---|
| All phases “ring”, resistance equal | No break |
| One phase “does not ring” (infinity) | Break in this winding |
| Different phase resistance | A partial break or short circuit is possible |
Where a break occurs
A break can be in the winding itself, in the soldering joints or in the terminals. Sometimes a break in the terminal box can be easily repaired. But a break inside the winding requires rewinding.
The exact location and cause are determined by diagnostics. Do not confuse a winding break with a power phase break - check the network as well.
