The engine is electrocuted: reasons and what to do

When the motor shocks the body, this is not a minor nuisance, but a direct threat to life. Such an engine cannot be operated until the cause is eliminated. Let's figure out why this happens and what to do.

Why the motor is electrocuted

  • Breakdown of the winding insulation on the housingThe most common reason. The insulation has become old or damaged, and the phase has “shorted” to the metal.
  • No or broken grounding.Without grounding, even a small leak is felt like a blow.
  • Moistening of the windingMoisture reduces the insulation resistance, a leak appears.
  • Damage to the power cableinside the terminal box.

What to do immediately

  1. Disconnect the motor from the network.
  2. Do not touch the housing while it is energized.
  3. Check the presence and integrity of the grounding.
  4. Call a specialist to measure the insulation resistance.

How to check the cause

The key test is measuring the insulation resistance with a megger. It shows whether there is leakage between the winding and the housing. The norm is considered to be a resistance not lower than that specified for the voltage class; upon breakdown, it drops to values close to zero.

Measurement resultOutput
High resistanceInsulation is normal, look for grounding
Low / zeroInsulation breakdown - need rewinding or drying

If the reason is moisture, drying the winding sometimes helps. In the event of a real insulation breakdown, rewinding of the winding is required. An accurate diagnosis is provided by instrumental diagnostics in Tashkent.
