How to check engine bearings

How to check engine bearings

Bearings are a consumable component of the engine, and their condition must be monitored. Let's look at how to check bearings in simple ways and when it's time to change them.

Checking methods

  • By ear. Attach a screwdriver or stethoscope to the bearing shield - a hum, knocking or grinding sound indicates wear.
  • For play. Rock the shaft radially and axially direction - noticeable play means wear.
  • For rotation. Rotate the shaft manually - rotation should be smooth, without jamming or crunching.
  • For heating.Overheating of the bearing shield during operation is a sign of a problem.

Symptoms wear

SymptomDegree
Smooth humInitial wear, lubricant has dried up
Knocking, crunchingDamage to tracks
Backlash shaftExcessive wear - urgent replacement
HeatingLack of lubrication or misalignment

When to change

Any knocking, crunching or play is a reason for replacement bearings. Tightening threatens the rotor touching the stator and causing expensive rewinding. An accurate assessment of the condition is provided by vibration diagnostics.
