The brush-commutator assembly is the most maintenance-demanding part of a DC motor. Let's look at its diagnostics.
What they check
- Brushes - wear, fit, spring force.
- Commutator - surface condition, wear, runout.
- Sparking - degree and cause.
- Interlamellae insulation.
Assessment of sparking
Slight sparking is acceptable, strong sparking is unacceptable. Causes of strong sparking:
| Cause | Symptom |
|---|---|
| Brush wear | Short brushes, weak clamping |
| Contamination | Scale on the commutator |
| Deterioration commutator | Uneven surface, runout |
| Protruding insulation | A path is required |
Inspection methods
- Visual inspection of brushes and commutator.
- Measurement of brush wear and runout commutator.
- Assessment of the nature of sparking during operation.
- Checking the armature winding.
Based on the diagnostic results, the commutator is cleaned, replaced, grooved and re-grooved. If the armature winding is damaged, rewinding is needed. A full assessment is given by diagnostics with disassembly.
