Diagnostics of the brush-collector unit

The brush-commutator assembly is the most maintenance-demanding part of a DC motor. Let's look at its diagnostics.

What they check

  • Brushes - wear, fit, spring force.
  • Commutator - surface condition, wear, runout.
  • Sparking - degree and cause.
  • Interlamellae insulation.

Assessment of sparking

Slight sparking is acceptable, strong sparking is unacceptable. Causes of strong sparking:

CauseSymptom
Brush wearShort brushes, weak clamping
ContaminationScale on the commutator
Deterioration commutatorUneven surface, runout
Protruding insulationA path is required

Inspection methods

  1. Visual inspection of brushes and commutator.
  2. Measurement of brush wear and runout commutator.
  3. Assessment of the nature of sparking during operation.
  4. Checking the armature winding.

Based on the diagnostic results, the commutator is cleaned, replaced, grooved and re-grooved. If the armature winding is damaged, rewinding is needed. A full assessment is given by diagnostics with disassembly.
