Drying motor windings

Drying motor windings

Moisture is the enemy of insulation. If the motor has been standing for a long time in a damp room, has been exposed to rain or has been flooded, its windings become moistened and the insulation resistance drops. Often, drying the windings allows you to save the motor without rewinding.

When drying is needed

  • The motor was stored for a long time in a damp place.
  • After flooding or water ingress.
  • Measuring with a megger showed a reduced insulation resistance.
  • The motor “electric shocks” due to moisture leakage.

Professional drying in an oven with temperature control gives the best result and does not damage the insulation by overheating.

How to control the result

During the drying process, periodically measure the insulation resistance with a megger. It should gradually increase and stabilize at a normal level. If, after complete drying, the resistance is not restored, the insulation is irreversibly damaged, and winding rewinding is needed.

After drying, it is useful to impregnate the motor with varnish to protect it from re-wetting. diagnostics will help to accurately assess the condition.
