Enterprises often pay fines for reactive power without even understanding where it comes from. Its main source is electric motors. Let's figure out what it is and how to save.
What is reactive power
To create a magnetic field, a motor needs a current that does not do useful work, but “oscillates” between the network and the winding. This is reactive power. It does not turn into movement, but it loads the network and transformers.
Why they pay for it
Reactive current loads the supply networks, so energy supply organizations issue bills or fines for low power factor (cos φ). The more underloaded engines, the lower cos φ and the higher the fee.
How to compensate
| Method | Description |
|---|---|
| Capacitor banks | Compensate reactive power, increase cos φ |
| Correct selection power | A loaded engine has a better cos φ |
| Idling shutdown | An underloaded engine “pulls” the reactive power |
The role of the condition of the engines
Worn out and incorrectly rewound engines have a reduced cos φ and consume more reactive power. Therefore, high-quality repair in compliance with the winding parameters helps not only reliability, but also savings. Underloaded engines should be replaced with ones that are suitable for power.
