How to calculate engine power

How to calculate engine power

The correct choice of engine power is the key to reliable operation. Underestimated power leads to overload and overheating, overestimated power leads to unnecessary costs and low cos φ. Let's look at how to calculate engine power.

What to start from

Engine power is selected according to the required power of the mechanism, taking into account the reserve. Typical mechanisms have their own formulas:

  • Pumps—by performance, pressure and pump efficiency.
  • Fans—by air flow and pressure.
  • Conveyors—by load weight, speed and resistance.

Power reserve

A reserve is added to the design power (usually 10–25%) so that the engine does not work at the limit. But an excessive reserve is harmful: an underloaded engine has low efficiency and cos φ.

SituationConsequence
Power is underestimatedOverheating, overload, combustion
Power optimalReliable economical operation
Power is too highLow efficiency, extra costs

Practical approach

When replacing, it is easiest to focus on the power of the failed engine, if it copes with the task. But if the old engine constantly overheated, it is worth reconsidering the choice. When selecting a replacement engine the speed and installation design are also taken into account.
