Motor grounding

Motor grounding

Grounding is a simple but vital safety measure. It protects people from electric shock due to insulation breakdown. Let's look at why grounding an electric motor is necessary.

How does grounding protect?

When a winding breaks down on the body without grounding, a dangerous potential appears on the metal - the motor “shocks with current”. Grounding drains the leakage current into the ground and ensures that the protection (automatic device, RCD) is triggered.

What to check

  • Presence and integrity of the grounding conductor.
  • Reliability of the grounding contact on the engine body.
  • Absence of corrosion at the connection point.
  • Compliance with the cross-section of the grounding conductor conductor.

Signs of problems with grounding

SymptomCause
The motor “pinches” with currentNo or poor grounding + leakage
The breakdown protection does not workBreakage grounding

Important:the feeling of current from the body is a signal not only of poor grounding, but also of insulation breakdown. Grounding protects, but the cause itself (breakdown) must be eliminated - often this is rewinding or drying.
