Glossary of terms: electric motors

There are many technical terms in the world of electric motors. We have collected a brief dictionary of basic concepts so that you can easily understand the masters and documentation.

Main components

  • Stator - the stationary part of the motor with a winding.
  • Rotor - the rotating part.
  • Winding - coils of insulated wire that create a magnetic field.
  • Squirrel cage - a type of rotor made of rods closed by rings.
  • Commutator - a DC motor unit for supplying current to the armature.

Characteristics

  • Efficiency - the share of useful energy.
  • cos φ - coefficient power.
  • Slip - lag of the rotor from the magnetic field.
  • Insulation class (B, F, H) - permissible winding temperature.
  • IP - degree of protection from dust and moisture.
  • IE1–IE4 - energy efficiency classes.

Faults

  • Interturn short circuit - short circuit of adjacent winding turns.
  • Insulation breakdown - short circuit of the winding to the housing.
  • Phase failure - disappearance of one of the three phases.
