Motor with or without brake

Motor with or without brake

In some mechanisms, the motor must stop quickly and hold the load. For this purpose, motors with built-in brakes are used. Let's look at how they differ from conventional motors.

Conventional motor

After turning off the power, it continues to rotate by inertia (coast) and does not hold the load. Suitable for mechanisms where quick stopping and fixing are not needed.

Motor with brake

Equipped with an electromagnetic brake that is activated when the power is turned off. This ensures:

  • Quick stop.
  • Keeping the load in a stationary position.
  • Safety during power failure.

Brake maintenance

The brake unit requires attention: the friction linings wear out, you need to control the gap and adjustment. When repairing a brake motor, both the motor and the brake are restored. Such machines are often used in crane and elevator equipment. The condition is assessed by diagnostics.
